Where BOMA Came From
The Building Owners and Managers Association of Georgia (BOMA Georgia) is a trade association representing one of the largest and most revenue-generating industries in the state: commercial real estate. In Georgia, commercial real estate contributes approximately $5.5 billion to the state’s economy; generates nearly $1.7 billion in new taxable personal earnings and supports nearly 46,000 jobs.
BOMA Georgia members are responsible for the ownership/management and administration of more than 150 million square feet of office space and additional millions of square feet of facilities throughout Georgia. These individuals represent building ownership, professional property management firms, professional service providers and contract services, including construction, cleaning services, security services, elevator maintenance and more than 40 other categories of specialty services. Our members have 24-hour-a-day responsibility for the safety, physical well-being and security of hundreds of thousands of employees housed in the office buildings, office parks and other facilities managed by this industry.
Backed by a strong commitment to government advocacy, BOMA Georgia members have participated in the successful implementation of sprinkler laws, smoking restrictions in public buildings, and ADA compliance for barrier-free access.
BOMA Georgia is also a leader in sustainability, offering a variety of green educational opportunities for real estate professionals. BOMA Georgia offers preparation courses—both in-person and online—for the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP Operations and Maintenance exams. BOMA Georgia’s Green Real Estate Network was created for professionals who have an interest in increasing their knowledge of green and sustainable practices. Members of this shared interest group receive invitations to breakfast events and are the first to know about green and sustainable course offerings from BOMA Georgia.
Finally, BOMA Georgia hosts an annual High Performance Building Summit (HPBS), designed to provide attendee with a comprehensive understanding of high performance real estate assets and their importance to maintaining an efficient and marketable real estate portfolio. It includes educational sessions, vendor displays and networking opportunities.
Regarding education, BOMA Georgia administers four designation programs for industry professionals, which were developed by the Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI). In addition to these college-level courses, numerous seminars and workshops hosted by BOMA Georgia keep members fully informed about and involved in leading industry topics.
BOMA Georgia also conducts a spirited competition annually to select The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) in various categories, while BOMA Georgia’s Association Awards honor outstanding leaders from the industry and from the community.
BOMA Georgia is affiliated with Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA International). Our members participate actively with BOMA International in the development of the international model codes for energy conservation, indoor air quality, elevator safety and other health and life safety issues. BOMA’s method of square footage floor measurement is the standard for the commercial property industry. BOMA International produces the annual Experience Exchange Report survey of operating expenses, which has also set the benchmarking standard for the industry.
With approximately1,000 members, BOMA Georgia is one of the largest associations in the BOMA International federation, which includes more than 90 North American associations, nine in Canadian cities and 11 affiliated international associations in Europe, South America and Southeast Asia. BOMA International has headquarters in Washington, DC.
